Cameroon Performance Awards

Dr. Kingue Thompson Attributes Successes Registered by the  Limbe Regional Hospital to Collective Action.

Dr. Kingue Thompson, Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital has attributed successes so far registered at the hospital  to collective action. He was speaking recently during the reception of the Cameroon Performance Award 2020  at his Limbe office on Wednesday August 19.

He seized the opportunity to thank the Cameroon Performance Award team for bringing efforts of the Limbe Regional Hospital to the limelight. "Today is a special day because of this mark of recognition. It is a special day because I and my staff are satisfied and because of that, we are convinced that our Satisfaction Index is getting higher" he said.

He said the reception of the Award was certainly going to motivate the entire staff of the Hospital. "Although on the Award Certificate it is the name of the Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital that is mentioned, it is indeed a recognition of the efforts that have been put in by the entire staff of the hospital" the self effacing Hospital Director said further thanking the Doctors, Nurses and all the Support Staff for their commitment which he said had caused the Hospital to be spotted among many other hospitals in the country.

The Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital thanked the CPA team for the message of encouragement that they had brought to him and his staff and said it was going to boost their moral to work hard and continue to increase the Satisfaction Index.

Delving into what had been done by the Limbe Regional Hospital since the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Dr. Kingue Thompson said since the first case was registered it had been continuous work. He said at the onset there was general panic not only among the population but also among the staff of the hospital.

The efforts of the Director of the Limbe Regional Hospital and the entire staff is summarised in the following words of his. "Beyond our skill and talent, we all came together and did what had to be done at the time. There was no well defined protocol to handle this case but we did everything that we could with love and this patient survived. We later received a number of cases. As it stands today, we have registered close to 260 cases and registered upto ten deaths but comparatively, I can say that we saved so many people that had been tested positive in this hospital. This is because of our determination to assist one another in helping Cameroonians and to make sure that people who come here have all the chances to survive. It is not destiny that kills people because there is what we call Preventable Deaths. This means that there are people who die in hospitals who could have survived. We of the Limbe Regional Hospital are determined to make sure that anyone who comes here with COVID-19 survives and our slogan is that no one dies at the Limbe Regional Hospital because of COVID-19."

The Director further intimated that for the past two months, the Limbe Regional Hospital had lost no one suffering from COVID-19. He said their strategy was to start treating people quickly as soon as the diagnosis tested them as positive. "Infront of the Laboratory for Clinical Examinations we immediately begin treatment. We stay close to patients because beyond the Physical Trauma that they pass through, there is also the Psychological Trauma so we do not isolate these patients to the extent that they feel dehumanised."

Dr. Kingue Thompson said though COVID-19 cases were isolated, they were made to feel the warmth of the Doctors and the Nurses. As a result many people came to be tested and when tested positive, they insisted to be treated only at the Limbe Regional Hospital. This he stated was an indication that patients were satisfied with the degree of comfort that they received at the Hospital during their treatment. At press time, the Limbe Regional Hospital had only a single admitted case of COVID-19.

Commenting on the noticeable drop in preventive measures among the people in public Dr. Kingue Thompson said it was certainly due to the fact that people were slowly getting tired of being kept under restrictive conditions. He said this was an expected reaction but said it was an indication that more intensive Sensitisation messages were needed."Dialogues and one to one conversions are needed to convince people that COVID-19 infections are still going on. Though the number of cases are lower than it was three months ago, it doesn't mean that the virus isn't still there."

The Self effacing personality presented his career life in the following manner. "I have worked only for thirty years. I say "only" because in the Medical Field, experience is all that makes the difference." Dr Kingue said every time that he was given an opportunity to talk to younger ones in the profession, he never failed to emphasize on the fact that no one can ever know everything in medicines and that it was very important to acknowledge one's limits in the face of difficult situations. When this occures and patients are referred to other specialists, lives are saved he explained.

Present to receive the Award from Francis Ekongang Nzante, the Chair Person of the Organising Committee of the Cameroon Performance Awards were Dr. Kingue Thompson accompanied by some members of the staff of the South West Regional Health outfit.

The recognition of Dr. Kingue Thompson for his hard work and performance also took into consideration his transforming efforts at the Bamenda Regional Hospital where he worked as director before being transferred to the Limbe Regional Hospital in the same capacity.
