Infrastructural updates
The
countdown to the Female African Cup of Nations AFCON is ticking on and in order
to organise one of the best events ever, 17 Ministries are to oversee
preparations of the continental event. Two towns, Yaounde and Limbe will be
hosting the female event. Meantime Infrastructure development for the 2019 African
Nations Cup in the male category has already begun. The Baffoussam Stadium is
almost set and many other infrastructural projects related to the event are
sprouting up.
With
the approach of 2016 and 2019, the Government of Cameroon has stepped up the
pace of working so as to live up to expectations with the exigencies of hosting
the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in both the female and male categories. Due
to delays, the Cameroon Government requested and got the blessings of the
Confederation of African Football- CAF to push the competition in the female
category from October 8-22, 2016 to November 19- December 3, 2016. With this
pushing ahead of the female rendezvous to November certainty that the event
will go hitch free have been heightened and there seem to be concerted efforts
to guarantee a successful hosting of the continental fiesta.
It
was with this in mind that the Presidential decree of October 3,2014 created an
Inter-ministerial Preparatory Committee headed by the Prime Minister, Head of
Government to oversee an optimal preparation of the 2016 and 2019 African Cup
of Nations Tournaments. This Commission has the mission to set a plan and strategy
for the success of the two tournaments. The specific task assigned to the
committee was to come up with infrastructure projects for the two tournaments
accompanied by a calendar on how the project is to be carried out. Also
included in their assignment was indicating where financing could be sourced
and their follow up. To enhance efficiency, the committee was assigned with a
Technical Secretariat.
The
Prime Minister then followed up the Presidential decree with an arrêté signed on December 10, 2014 spelling out
the modalities for the functioning of the Technical Secretariat. Following the
standards for the Confederation of African Football, a stadium for the
competition and five training grounds that comply with the standards of the
federation and appropriate hosting facilities will be made available in each of
the selected towns. In the case of Women African Cup of Nations in 2016 Limbe
and Yaounde and Yaounde,Bafoussam, Garoua and Douala-Limbe for the 2019
tournament.
2016 Female AFCON
Yaounde
and Limbe have been selected to play host to the competition. A 20,000 capacity
Omnisport stadium in the Ngeme neigbourhood of Limbe has been completed by the
China Machinery Engineering Corporation. The work was accepted in September
2014.The stadium with a turf of 90 x 120m is set to host
matches of international magnitude. What is still being done is the
indispensable outer works on surrounding facilities such as accesses, bypass
roads and parking space. Following a recent visit by Abba Sadou, Minister
Delegate at the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Public Contracts, the
outer works were contracted to three firms firms and these firms were given a
maximum of eight months to complete their tasks. MAG Sarl Firm is constructing
the main access road into the west end of the stadium at a cost of FCFA 3.8
billion. BUNS is in charge of bypass roads, a task which will cost FCFA 7.66
billion. Meanwhile Groupement Croisière BTP Route d’Af was given FCFA 5.4
billion to develop the parking space.
The Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in
Yaounde in its current state experts say, requires in-depth works to live up to
the standards of an international tournament like the African Cup of Nations. This will involve an intense renovation and
refurbishing of three training grounds including the two annex stadia of the
Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium and the Yaounde Military Stadium.Contracts of the
fitting of seats, rehabilitation of the turf and athletic tracks of the Ahmadou
Ahidjo Stadium have been awarded to two contractors.
Alcor Equipments
is refurbishing the seating space for FCFA 3 billion while China
Shanxi Construction Engineering with FCFA
1.2 billion will rehabilitate the turf and athletic tracks of
the Stadium. Sinohydro Corporation Limited from China was awarded the contract to carry out civil
engineering works at the annex one and
two of the Military Stadium in Ngoa-Ekelle to serve as training ground. This
will cost FCFA 3.2 billion.
