EXHIST University Bamenda Matriculates Batch of Valour

By Fancis Ekongang Nzante

The Experiential Higher Institute Of Science and Technology Bamenda has matriculated the Batch of Valour. This colourful event took place on Friday November 26th at Mondial Hotel in Bamenda. The Matriculating students were  christened the “Batch of Valour” because of the courage they have mustered to go to school under very trying conditions in Bamenda, a town presently rated as unsecured because of the ongoing Anglophone Crisis.

Speaking
during the heavily attended event, the guest speaker Professor Ngam Confidence Chia, Associate  Professor of Diplomatic and Political History at the Faculty of Law and Political Science in the University of Bamenda focused his presentation on Settling for Excellence and Distinction through morals in a crowded and troublesome neighbourhood. This choice of focus he said was influenced by the present unrest which has greatly reduced employment opportunities among other things for students graduating from Higher Institutions of Learning in the crisis affected areas especially in the North West Region where schooling for sometime now is considered a taboo.

Professor Ngam further said he was speaking against the backdrop of a society in which values have been discarded and crime wave is rising geometrically.

The purpose Professor Ngam Confidence said was to tell the students of EXHIST that they had a moral righteousness embedded in them and in the core values of the school. This awareness he said should push them to stand out and make the difference considering the fact that they’ve been given the opportunity to study in an establishment that provided favourable conditions to be well groomed morally.

He admonished the students to put man at the core of all their dealings. These qualities he said would make them to get employment any where in the world.

The Director of EXHIST University Cameroon Mr Ngang Nelson Nche on his part recognised the fact that the University Institute was still far from attaining its ultimate objectives but said he counted on the staff and other stakeholders to make that happen.

Addressing parents who turned out for the occasion, the Director said he was aware of their desire to see their children transformed into better people at EXHIST University. “We wish to assure you that EXHIST will not only impart good knowledge to them but also values that will bestow on the individual the desire to believe in moral values.”

He said for the past two years students of EXHIST Bamenda had to travel to Yaounde for Matriculation and that the euphoria that used to accompany such an event was largely missing.

“We are delighted to see how happy you are today. It is our desire to see that EXHIST University Bamenda becomes fully autonomous from the Yaounde Campus.”

He called on the Matriculating students to remember that the end of any journey always marked the beginning of another. Matriculation he said meant stepping forward to accept the challenges that come with the pursuit of knowledge. “The responsibility to uphold the name of EXHIST in everything you do both on and off campus and to later give your Alma mater honour and fame in the way you practice what was acquired from here lies on you....We are growing with you and we are gradually putting the structures that will propel you to better academic heights....We have grown rapidly in three years. From 12 students in the 2019-2020 Academic year here in Bamenda, we are at a total of 82 students in the 2021-2022 Academic Year. We have sent out two batches of HND and Professional Degree students, we have had our authorisation from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Memorandum of Understanding Mou with the University of Bamenda that permits us to  offer professional Bachelor and Master Degree Programmes.”

The Director further said that the school had extended to other fields apart from Health Sciences.

The matriculating students ranged from HND, Bachelor to Master students. The colourful event also saw the award of scholarships to deserving students and the installation of the Executive Committee of the student’s Union.

Matriculation at EXHIST University

Academics and Morality is the only Means to Transform Cameroon – Dr Tadzong Grace Awasum

By Francis Ekongang Nzante

Dr. Tadzong Grace Awasum has stated emphatically that morals hold a very important place in academics and that it is the only way that trained young Cameroonians can possibly impact on the transformation process of their country. She was speaking on Friday November 19th  in Yaounde during the Matriculation Ceremony at EXHIST University where she was the guest speaker.

She emphasised without reserve on the importance of the underlying role of morals in any educational venture. “Morality plays a major role in academics. We are training health care professionals to contribute in the building of this nation and we can’t build without morality. Morality is the capacity to accept what is good and say no to what is bad. It is the capacity to look at another person and respect the dignity in that person.” She said Academic Excellence without morality will not be able to help the student to build but will rather help the student to destroy. “In an institution like this, we aspire to build and improve upon the competences of students. They should be thought to do to others what they expect others to do to them. This is the principle of reversibility. This principle states that if you do something and it comes back to you then you should be happy. That's why morality to me is more important than having good grades and excelling in academics. If I teach a student I will not expect that student to be upright if I am not morally upright. It takes me to be a moral model for the student for it is only through this means that we can have any positive impact on this country.” Dr Tadzong Grace Awasum is an Associate Professor of Nursing and Public Health at the School of Health Sciences of the Catholic University of Cameroon.

Madam Eyong Quinta, Director of Academic Affaires at EXHIST University Yaounde said this was the third year of the existence of the institution and that 70 students were involved in the matriculation ceremony which was logically the third that had ever been organised by the University Institute. “We have matriculated 70 students today. There are those for Health Sciences, those for Home Economics, Business and Finance as well as Computer Engineering and Software. What is Special about this year’s Matriculation ceremony is that the students were given the name “Batch of Innovation.”  This is because EXHIST has realised and are still realising many new things.”

She said at EXHIST University students could simultaneously receive their lessons online as the classes were going on adding that the institution apart from Health Sciences had opened its doors to new options. She further intimated that the Student Union had been created and that the Executive Committee of this body was installed during the Matriculation ceremony. This body she said had been selected following free and fair elections. “Another uniqueness of this Academic year is that we also recognised students who stood out in qualities such as Discipline, Humility and morality. We encourage every student at EXHIST University not only to be academically upright but to also be morally upright.”

The Student Union President Ekwebe Clotilda called on all the students to collaborate with them in order to make sure that the newly installed Executive Committee would meet up with the responsibilities that were placed on their shoulders. In this manner, all the problems of students would be duly conveyed to the appropriate quarters for appropriate solutions to be sorted out.

Mr Ngang Nelson Nche, Director of EXHIST University, Cameroon addressed the matriculating students in the following manner: “Dear Freshmen of EXHIST, from now on, you shall carry the image, character, thinking, etiquette and honour of EXHIST....Permit me paraphrase Charles Darwin (1809-1882) by saying, it is not the strong or clever who survive but rather those who are resilient, embrace innovation and are ready for transformation.

As young adults, you need to equip yourself with the know-how that the 21st century needs.

We live in times of furious change precipitated by technological changes.  The old ways of doing things have been rendered untenable. Going forward, only those who are innovative and accept new challenges will survive. Acquiring skills in Information and Technology will go a long way to improve your success. There is absolutely no excuse for anyone, not of this generation to be computer illiterate, no matter your area of specialty. This is why we have made available recent technological gadgets to assist you get the best in your studies here.

Remember you have embarked on a journey of growth through a comprehensive and well packaged subject matter. From today, you must remain open minded, be tolerant to divergent views and receive and evaluate opinions without prejudice.”

Some highlights of the occasion included a Matriculation Discuss by guest speaker Dr. Mrs. Awasum, Traditional Dances, Presentation of Matriculating students by the Director of Academic Affaires madam Eyong Quinta, Taking of Matriculation Oaths coordinated by Dr Ojage Raphael Ayuk, Pledging Ritual by Mr Humphrey and Mme Marion, the award of scholarships by the Director of Academic Affairs and the installation of Student Union Delegates by Mr Ngang Peter.

EXHIST University, Cameroon

“There's an Unprecedented Upsurge of Anglo-Saxon Universities in Yaounde”

-      Director EXHIST University

By Francis Ekongang Nzante

Mr. Ngang Nelson Che, Director and Founder of the Experiential Higher Institute of Science and Technology, Cameroon has in a brush with the media recently in his Yaounde office intimated that the number of Anglo-Saxon Higher Institutions of Learning in Yaounde has reached an unprecedented high.

This transformation of the Education landscape he said is one of the fallouts of the Anglophone Crisis which has pushed many Anglo-Saxon Higher Institutions of Learning from Bamenda which he describes as the hub of Education in Cameroon to Yaounde and Douala. Mr Ngang said it was against this backdrop that EXHIST University opened the Yaounde Campus after the original Bamenda Campus.

He said what pushed the founders to create this Higher Institution of learning was the high level of unemployment among graduates from some State and Private Universities across the country. The founders of EXHIST he said noticed that though these graduates had beautiful degrees, they lacked the basic skills to compete favourably in the job market. They decided therefore to train Cameroonians who would not only have the certificates but the skills as well. This explains why the institution is referred to as Experiential which has to do with hands on learning. This he said is the basis on which the institution was established.

Mr Ngang said since most of the founders were specialised in the Health domain, the institution when it was created focused only on the school of Health and Biomedical Sciences. For the first two years the school ran specialties such as nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics. However with the rising demand the Founders decided to expand into other fields.

So apart from just the Health Sciences, the School is now also involved in Business, Finance and Management, Home Economics, Tourism and Hospitality Management. The Institution is also involved in Education and Computer Engineering and Networking.

“Before the crisis, there were very few Anglo-Saxon Higher Institutions of Learning in Yaounde. I would want to think that the need was not there since the North West and South West were booming with Higher Institutions of Learning. But with the onset of the crisis, the bulk of students have moved from the North West and the South West to Douala, Yaounde and other cities and the need for these schools is suddenly there. The number of Anglo-Saxon Higher Institutions are presently very high and it is the students now who have the task of making the right choice” Ngang Nelson Che explained.

He further explained that being an institution registered under the Ministry of Higher Education, EXHIST works following a programme that was crafted by the titular ministry. Most often he said, these curriculums are developed to meet up with the needs of the communities.

“However, because of our desire to empower the students with skills, we enrich these curriculums. We are not just working with what we got from the Ministry. We have been able to make our own research and we have enriched the curriculum such that final products will be very useful to their communities” Ngang Nelson explained.

He said since they broadened their outreach in the third year of existence to other specialties, they had students coming in from other schools. Some he said came in with the HND while others came into level II. “That’s how we had our first graduation in September where we churned out 64 students” he said.

“We all know Bamenda to be the seat of Education but with the present crisis many of these schools including EXHIST have opened up campuses in Yaounde and Douala. Many students who would have normally wanted to study in the North West or South West Regions have now moved either to Yaounde, Douala or other cities.”
